19 Things You Wish You Knew Back Then

Living life each day, trying to learn and grow, we feel like we have so many things we have left to improve. But perspective means everything. Looking back, we recognize we have both great memories as well as things we regret.

We can all say there were a lot of unnecessary things we used to stress over although in hindsight they don’t really matter. At the same time, there were things we didn’t focus enough on which we now know are more important and mean the most to us. There are just a lot of things we wish we had known earlier.

Here are 19 things you wish you knew then.

19 Things You Wish You Knew Back Then -1. Other people can never determine your self-worth.

Your opinion of yourself is what matters. The opinions of other people who don’t walk in your shoes every day should not dictate how you feel about yourself. When it comes to your opinion of yourself, treat yourself as gently as you would a little child. Be kind to and accepting of yourself.

2. Being a popular girl/guy when you were in school doesn’t really matter.

Once school is over, being popular becomes completely insignificant. New people you meet won’t care at all if you were cool in college or high school. The thing that does matter though more than being cool is being an overall nice person. Always.

3. Welcome change into your life.

Things change, people change, and there’s nothing you can do to stop that. Everything around you can change in an instant, including you! So no matter what happens, just learn to embrace that change and grow with it. It is an inevitable part of life.

4. Work hard, but take care of yourself.

It is important to get all your work done, stay on track, and at times go the extra mile with your job or career, but remember – your life isn’t comprised of only work. Your health is important, too, as is the time lost when you work too much. So don’t spend all of your precious time working.

5. Slow down.

We have a tendency to rush so much and we miss a lot of good things in life while going too fast. Enjoy the beauty of each precious moment as they happen. Take a deep breath. Slow down.

6. Not everything goes as planned.

Stuff sometimes happens. You cannot plan everything and expect everything to go as originally planned. Things could turn out differently in the end and sometimes it is disappointing and other times it is better that way. Now you’ve learned to adjust to whatever happens.

7. It’s okay to make mistakes.

You’ve heard it before but it is true – everyone makes mistakes. Most of us, daily. No one gets through without making mistakes. You don’t have to beat yourself up when you make a mistake. Mistakes are precious opportunities to learn and grow and forgive yourself.

8. Some things are not worth getting too upset over.

When things get tough, just try to laugh it off. No matter how difficult it is, a time will come that you will look back and it will be part of your past. You will even realize you’ve grown from the experience.

9. The things that are worth it aren’t often the easiest to accomplish.

The things that are worth more in this life also often require more patience and hard work. Remember that.

10. Money is not the most important thing in the world, but be wise in handling the money you do have.

When working for income, remember that when you go, you cannot take your material stuff with you to the other side. Time and relationships are more important; and usually, it is more than enough to just learn how to earn just enough and be wise with your own money.

11. Take good care of your teeth.

Caring for your teeth is among the most practical things in life you need to consider. Take good care of your permanent teeth because you only get one set of them and dental work is both painful and expensive.

12. Get enough sleep.

People who don’t get sufficient amount of sleep on a regular basis are more likely to get ill and/or be subject to certain accidents and die early. Life just isn’t as good without enough sleep.

13. Get out of toxic relationships.

Toxic people don’t do anything but make your life miserable. They are not worth any of your attention so surround yourself with positive people instead.

14. You cannot change others.

Do not ever bother trying to change someone else. A person can only change himself/herself. Trying to change someone else is pointless. Instead, just be there for others.

15. If it’s not making you happy, it’s probably not worth it.

A lot of the time people try to endure too much in life, such as jobs and relationships, that just aren’t working. They find themselves miserable. When it comes to these bigger things in life, evaluate what matters and what the consequences are either way. Make decisions that will help you and not hurt you in the long run.

16. Relationships with the people you genuinely love means more than anything else.

People not things, money, or status are what really matters in this life.

17. Speak up for the things that are important to you.

Remember the times when you felt you should have said something but you didn’t? Speak up. Words are powerful. You are powerful. And, you are important. If something is of importance to you (or to the world), it is worth standing up for. What you say matters. Your words have the power to change things so always speak your truth.

18. Do your own thing.

You don’t have to please everybody or do what everyone else is doing. Ultimately, all that really matters is what you are doing. What others do is their own business, and what you do is yours. People come and go so don’t do make your decisions based on whether it will be pleasing to others.

19. Love yourself.

Do not be ashamed of who you are. We are all here to complete a unique journey of our own and love is the ultimate destination. Embrace your uniqueness. Your differences are what makes you great. Love yourself, flaws and all. You were made to be exactly who you are.
